It was a great day for me on Sunday 16th February as I finished 1st place
at the Australian Sprint Championships in the 35-39 age group held in
St.Kilda. Training has been going well for me, a lot better than the past
2 years.

On the morning of the race I awoke to some pleasing conditions. The ocean
was extremely choppy. I love a choppy swim even though it makes for very
difficult conditions on the bike. I had backed off my swimming over the
past 3 weeks to allow for more energy in my riding and running sessions. I
have the luxury of many years in triathlons and ocean swimming that allows
me to do this and still swim well.

As per usual the swim I pushed hard to take advantage of these favourable
conditions. Out of the swim I felt fresh and ready to punch the ride. The
ride was very challenging with huge side wind gusts making it hard to stay
balanced on the tri bars.

It has been amazing the difference the new purchase of the GIANT Trinity time
trial bike with Di2 electronic gearing has made. My bike leg feels
smoother with allows me to push harder. My back stiffness and problems
have also gone. The bike is normally my weakest leg and people thought I
was a little crazy riding the Zipp 808’s. These all seem to combine
together to make my bike leg better which then flows down to my run.

The run I was greeted with a nice tail wind out to the turn around. The
run on this day felt a lot quicker than other days. More speed. The whole
run I felt I could keep pushing the envelope, limits.

My overall time was 1hour 2min 15seconds, 2min 15seconds ahead of 2nd place.

This when comparing myself to the overall age group competitors including
the Open category which included some elites that had to drop back due to
not having a professional license I was 7th fastest in the non-drafting
race & 1min behind the fastest time.

My next race is the Gatorade Triathlon Series Race 4 on
Sunday 16th March.

It is over a distance of 800m swim 26km ride 8km run.
Portarlington is like a home ground so I'm looking forward to continuing the good form.

Cheers Adam
