As my mum would say: “what a palaver”. The gun went to start my wave of the Urban Hotels Geelong Long Course triathlon – with me on the beach with my back to the action, posing for the camera, kissing babies, slipping my latte and talking to friends. All I could think of was that I’d wasted my $250 entry fee, but as I gradually swum through the back markers, then the mid packers, I began to think maybe I’m still in this race after missing the start so badly.

Onto the bike I was riding angry, at myself for being a kook as well as at a few blatant drafters out on the course. This anger had an upside, as I completed the bike leg in a new PB for 90ks and happy to see relatively few bikes in the compound on my return.

Not having done much run training due to some issues since my last race in October, I didn’t expect to have the usual spring in my step and pushing hard on the bike wasn’t going to help – but I was surprised to feel ok once I’d settled into a rhythm. When a guy passed me at 13k who I recognized as a very good runner and serious threat for the age group win, it meant a much harder end to the run than I wanted. Of course the head to head battle ended up in a finish shute sprint which I won by a meter – to then find out that he was in a younger A/G!

Good, solid racing and very happy to take the 45-49 win at Geelong. Thanks to CBD Cycles for yet again having my bike ready to rock, thanks to Newton Running Australia, PowerBar and 2XU for the continued support and thanks for my coach and the TRG crew for the guidance and friendship.

A very satisfactory start to my 2013 Summer race season!
