Anna Francis 2013 Geelong Long Course Race Report:

With just six weeks to go until IM Melbourne, it was important for me to nail the race in Geelong on Sunday. Having spent 8 days up in the Alpine Region two weeks prior to Geelong, I was feeling confident with the bike training I’d done, and hoping my improved bike would pay off on the run too!

I’d been to see Craig at Aqua Shop on Saturday in the expo, and ended up walking away with a new Blue Seventy, Helix wetsuit and goggles, very unexpectedly! I’ve needed a new wetsuit for some time, so then was as good a time as ever to buy one! But as all good athletes know, race day probably isn’t the best time to try something new! Having said that, I’ve never had too much trouble being comfortable in a wetsuit, so I felt confident giving it a go… and found it was well worth it! I had the best ever swim I’ve had in a 70.3, coming in at 26:01!

Heading out on the bike, I felt like I could be quite aggressive, so I pushed through at a slightly higher hear rate than coach recommends. I know my bike is strong compared to my run, therefore gaining a few minutes on the bike seemed like a better plan than holding back and not necessarily backing it up with a strong run! I’m not sure that plan of attack will work, come Ironman day, so it’s back to the running track for now!!

After Shepparton 70.3, Coach Tedde had said I needed to try to build into the run a bit more, so that was my focus for Sunday. I often come off the bike feeling like I have to get a head start, and yesterday was no exception. My pacing was better, but I think I’ll definitely be fitting in a solid Winter running season in 2013!! I still had a solid race and finished in 4:39, 1st in 30-34 and 3rd age grouper across the line!

Thank you to my coach Julie Tedde, CBD Cycles, Liv/giant, PowerBar and Mizuno for their continued support, and also to the outstanding members of the TRG community! We have had a huge 2013 season so far, and it is great to be able to walk back into the marquee at the end of the race, to share stories and pain! I can’t wait to run past the cheer squad at Green Point on March 24!!
