2011 AUSTRALIAN MTB CHAMPIONSHIPS

On the 25 of Feb the AUS MTB champs were held @ Eagle Quarry MTB Park in S.A. The course, as one would expect from the name, was quite rocky with a lot of technical single track including rock-garden climbs, boulders to negotiate and lots of rocky downhill’s. Many riders fell victim to the rocky terrain with a countless number of flats including myself on the last lap.
It was 35oC on the day with my race (Expert Men) starting in the heat of it at 4:00pm. I didn’t have the best start getting caught in a “bunch-up” in the starting sprint when many riders came undone in the first gravel pinch. By the top of the first big climb I had hit the front and stayed there for the rest of the race opening a comfortable lead allowing me to ride my own race and concentrate on putting in nice clean lines through the single track. My new Giant MTB the Anthem Advanced SL loves to go hard and is easily the best riding bike I have ever owned. Giant just keeps making their bikes better and better every year. I think that’s why so many people ride Giant, but I had the latest, which undoubtedly the best Anthem they have delivered yet.
With less than 2km to go I slashed a rear tyre on a rocky descent, fortunately I had been running Stan’s sealant in the tyre which filled the hole but slowed me down considerably as I had lost most of the pressure. I made the decision to continue riding despite feeling the rim hit hitting the ground as a tackled the last downhill. I tried to take it easy but still crashed, sliding out due to the amount of tyre role with the low pressure. The rocky ground claimed a bit of bark off my hands and knees but I still managed to finish nearly four minutes ahead of the next rider.
A Big thanks to CBD Cycles and Giant who managed to get me a new Giant Anthem X Advanced and shoes from Shimano despite the fact I only gave them 3 days notice before I departed for Adelaide. To Shotz sporting nutrition for fueling me though-out the year. I’m the engine, Shotz is THE fuel!
Cheers
